What is Batik?

Batik is a traditional Indonesian craft. It uses wax and dye to create patterns and designs on fabric. Wax is heated and applied to the fabric, using stamps or hand drawing. Once the wax has cooled, the fabric is dyed or painted. Traditionally, it is then heated so that the wax melts away, leaving a pattern in the dyed fabric.

What you’ll make

Batik painting uses special fabric dyes to bring your wax design to life. Our kit is an update on traditional batik, focussing on colouring the design and turning it into a piece of artwork. The birds of paradise design has been pre-drawn in wax on the fabric and mounted in a hoop all ready to go.

The joy of this craft is in the mixing and blending of the colours, and watching them spread on the fabric. The kit comes with 5 primary colours, which can be mixed together to create a wide range of beautiful tones to decorate your design with. As your brush touches the fabric, the paint spreads in a very satisfying way - and by adding a new colour next to it, they will blend together beautifully. Paint all the sections of your design however you like, to create a truly unique piece of art.

Time to make

The batik painting took Rachel 2-3 hours to complete. Mixing colours and getting used to the technique may make it take a longer or shorter time.
